Police Story: Lockdown (AKA Police Story 2013) (2013)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talk about Police Story: Lockdown, the sixth film in Jackie Chan's long-running Police Story franchise. Known as Police Story 2013 in Asian markets, this standalone sequel (!!) has no relation to the other films other than Jackie Chan playing a cop. Time time around, he's playing Zhong Wen, a detective in the noir mold with a drinking problem and a sassy daughter (Jing Tian). After visiting her at a nightclub, he gets knocked unconscious. Now everyone has to survive while they are being threatened by criminal mastermind and former underground fighter Wu Jiang (Liu Ye). Employing a convoluted narrative peppered by flashbacks chock-full of melodrama, Police Story: Lockdown is far less comedic than other films in the franchise. It's also a bore, but there are a few tense sequences here and there. This flick didn't get a release in the United States until 2015 under the title Police Story: Lockdown. 

Mat catches the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on HBO and enjoys its mixture of childlike wonder and child abuse. Thrasher saw Spider-Man Homecoming in the cinemas and loves how the story focuses on lower stakes; it's not the whole planet Earth that's in danger for once.
