Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, William Thrasher, and very special guest Eric McEver (writer and director of Paleonaut) discuss Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
After Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) tricks Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) into a fiery death, Salazar swears his revenge. Now drunk and besotten, Sparrow trades in his magical compass for a bottle of rum, setting off a cataclysmic series of events.
Feeling more like a true follow up to the original Pirates trilogy than the fourth film, it also feels a bit tired. Many action scenes end a bit too soon and emotional scenes strive to have a weight that's unearned. Despite this, there are zombie sharks and a ridiculous credit cookie.
Mat discusses the recent Arnold Schwarzenegger drama Aftermath based on a disturbing true story of a man getting revenge on an air traffic controller after his wife dies in a mid-air airplane collision. Eric enjoys a collection of the family saga comic strip Gasoline Alley. Thrasher feels Cold Skin to be a spiffy Lovecraftian lighthouse bound horror romance.
