Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher discuss Oz the Great and Powerful. A charlatan carnival barker gets transported to Oz where he has 99 problems and a witch is one. Starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz.
Sam Raimi's first foray into the high fantasy genre since Army of Darkness, Oz the Great and Powerful carries on the dark humor and wit of the books into its own story. James Franco makes a decent titular Oz, Michelle Williams is a resplendent Glinda, but there are too many special effects here just for a gag. A big war battle at the end never has as much stakes as bitchy relationship between the witches does. Often goofy at times (what Raimi film isn't?), Oz the Great and Powerful is charming enough where you wish a few more flicks would have been made in this same style.
