Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, William Thrasher, Jersey Jason, and guest David Morrell (author of the novel First Blood) discuss First Blood, the original Rambo movie. John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) tries to hitch a ride to Portland, Oregon, but is instead thrown in jail by Sheriff William Teasle. Fueled by PTSD, Rambo escapes with his fighting instinct on high alert. His former mentor Colonel Samuel Trautman (Richard Crenna) is called in to bring him down.
Playing more as a straight drama until the action starts, First Blood is the opposite of what most expect from the Rambo series. Stallone garners a good deal of sympathy for the lead character, particularly in a memorable monologue near the end. Jerry Goldsmith's score is both mournful and exciting at times. The end credits vocal theme "It's a Long Road" performed by Dan Hill is cornball, but the lyrics fit the theme of the story.
