Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Creed, the latest film in the Rocky series. Way back on the original Sequelcast podcast, Mat and Thrasher discussed the Rocky films. To get caught up with the latest film in the series, they are doing a catch-up episode. They do this every once in a while. Nothing to worry about.
Creed weaves a tale about Adonis (Michael B. Jordan), Apollo Creed's out of wedlock son. After doing a series of underground boxing matches in Mexico, Donnie realizes his passion lies in the sweet science. He quites a lucrative full-time office job, moves to Philadelphia, and seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), the man who fought against his late father. Although Rocky is reluctant at first, Donnie wins him over. When word gets out that Donnie is related to the great Apollo Creed, he gets an offer to fight World Light Heavyweight Champion "Pretty" Ricky Conaln (Tony Bellew). Focusing more on drama than over-the-top montages, Creed reminds one more of the original Rocky film in both plot and tone. The romance with Bianca (Tessa Thompson) is rushed a little bit, but I have a feeling she'll get more to do in the sequel.
Mat catches Black Panther in the movie theatre and enjoys how it's more of a standalone film than other recent flicks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thrasher enjoys the absurd films of Christopher R. Mihm.
