Leadership demands a feedback loop. Managers and employees alike need to know where they stand.

Expectations like communication are all too often left at the door. Meaning everyone assumes they have been expressed, received and understood when they have not.

It is hard to live up to unknown expectations. As a result, there is an impression of failure on the part of the employee, student or team mate who did not accomplish the task to meet the standards never understood. This perceived failure often leads to a harsh and less than flattering review. This less than flattering review leads extended poor performance, employees disgruntled with management and eventually to employee turnover.

This same frustration is directly impacting the bottom line. WHY? Because the expectations were not clear. The feedback loop included a pronouncement and possible punishment of missing a misunderstood goal or expectation.

If you are a leader, expectation is your role! Be clear about what your expectations are. Be fair about what your expectations are. Celebrate every small accomplishment toward those expectations.
