Three printing today, shown over five fifty maker button, flash forge, don't discount the world. P, C, T, G, first try.

Will come back to three d printing today. The pod test about all aspects of three d printing, hobby, professional, industrial IT does not matter. Recovered all my name's andy corn on here.

mister to windy.

but you do and doing pretty good. So our new story today does not come out of the news aggregate websites because it's not on the news aggregate with websites, which is curious. So I don't understand why um we get this new story from a direct email from approval research.

okay. Um it's announcing that the the previously announced relationship between Bruce and printed solid, a company that we were, were familiar with for years. Um we we used to get filament from them. I don't know why we don't anymore. They were .

haven't heard .

much about them. They were a solid company unch and and we've always like working with them. Um well a couple years ago they uh pressure and petition all that announced a partnership in the us and the email that was broadcasting to everybody who associates with person research one way or another um announces that now printed solid will be producing actually manufacturing um the mark for s mental in the U S. Let's talk a little bit about the mark for us. It's a mental printer which means that the you tell me what what is the most explicit thing about a mental well that the bed move is .

in the y access is not rather than the z access of the bad moves with essentially every print move.

And x is lifted up in z, so x goes exxon Z R in a genti. right? And why is the bed? Yeah, very important.

That's that's the definition of but what makes the proof of mental different from just about any of the other metals that are on the market? Is IT a direct drive feather on the extrude, which we feel gives you a lot more control on the actual extrusion activity? The right.

But what's really going on the most important aspects of what's happening within your exclude, you get a lot more control with a direct drive feature. And the other really important feature about the prosa mental design is that IT doesn't use delerm rollers that uses linear a bear rings on rods, chrome kind of roads. They're not very thick roads, but the size of the span is enough so that they can get away with a diamond roads that they're using. And as such um you get the best quality and probably the fastest speed that you could get from a mental you're onna get from a percent mental right?

Yeah I I look at look at the idea of having a um you know non direct drive extruded trying to minimize the weight on the gentry and a member is just kind of silly because you're sling in the Better around. You've got so much way more moving mass than you would have with with the heavier est direct drive extra that why would you care about that? Ut.

yet so many of the japan chinese machines. Well, yes, boden s and there's things .

like the like the ender design right, which is ubiquitous and IT works fine. But if you put a direct drive extra on there, then you've got more weight on there. And in that case, you're only supporting the gentry and one. And yes.

right? So and we've got direct experience with that. We put a direct drive e 3d feder on our under three and IT hasn't been the same since。 Just not a good printer anymore. I don't recommend doing IT delon roldan give and the more weights on them the more they're gonna give anyway we we really wish printed solid and pro so look um in the email uh Joseph pru so makes a statement that um I think we should all use as our uh test for them for the next year OK Joseph says and I quote that we plan to become the largest manufacturer of three d printers and filament in the USA within a year.

I don't know I don't know who else is is building pressure competition that be hard to do but but well, yeah, it's cool. I I kind of make sense that I mean, Bruce, all their printers have always been kind of open source with three d printed parts. And so that makes IT pretty easy to transplant manufacturing until you get up to the to the tool changer, which um um you they're not going to be building those in the U S. Anytime, unfortunately.

Yeah but I would be too expensive yeah .

but IT makes IT. I think it's a worthwhile move for proof because the U. S. Is probably their biggest market and having their buying a printer from overseas into the us. Market, why would you buy IT from checked public when you could buy IT from china for a court of the Price you so they can probably become more competitive in the U S. Um and also by producing locally, be um open new markets for themselves.

I think so. I think so. I think everything being produced in the USA is A A good marketing thing. I think you work out well and .

me good print.

Yeah that is it's a very good printer. And if you're gna buy a mental, you can go wrong with the okay.

what's coming up on our show this week? We're going to start talking about the a connection between maker bott and .

flash for to cuss why you should not discount the build aspect of buying a kit and then .

you're gonna tell us about your first try, uh, printing P, C, T.

G. Let's do IT.

We should have name this a tale of two companies, kind of like the the, what is a print, the world where IT was a tale of form labs and maker bott know this time the stories about make their body again. But instead of foreign ves were going to be talking about flash word.

Yeah so this .

story um is relevant today because the new story we did last week about the the latest product coming out of ultimately er which is the the combined company of ultimately er and maker bott. If we look back on that combination, IT wasn't one company buying the other company out. IT seemed more like IT was these two companies equally joining forces with some of the leadership of one company, taking control at one point and then bowing out and letting the leadership of the other company take take IT over with a lot of the resource is still in place, which um is good except that um well as an outside investor I look at both companies maker botton ulto maker and I see technologies that are um to put IT mildly passing yeah .

there are Better .

technologies out there for less money today and as such, I probably would not invest in that until I saw some technical improvement which we're not seeing. Um however, um as we reported in our previous episode, well, I think we're going na bump this one into so it's the next episode um maker bott or ultimately er announced a new three d printer at which I believe is badgered as a maker bott which is a correct y uh plastic enclosure injecting molded plastic enclosure machine which is by definition P L A only um and we suspect there's no he to build place in IT. They don't mention .

IT at least to three.

We suspect that we we don't see any indication that there's a heated bill plate. Um and um so it's related to that story that we decided to do this discussion. So let's go back in time.

Years ago, maker bots at standalone company ultimately ers not part of this survey, part of the story um the replicator one had been out for a few years. So we're talking to twelve pretty sure was twenty twelve, maybe two twenty thirteen, that unknown company in china, which label themselves flash words, took the replicator one and duplicated IT. They replicated the replicator and they called they called the duplicate.

Or I think was that what they named IT? Or was that was that that other company if the duplicate? Or was the company that follow flash forge that has the little right nosis as their logo?

yeah. yeah.

But flash forge came out with the almost a duplicate of the replicator one. And when we say a duplicate, we mean that not only did they did they use the what we believe they used the same files for the um the laser cut wood panels so they were exact duplicates. If they weren't, are using the same files.

And we believe they took the original mighty board, the mightie board won and duplicated IT along with its rather serious funding of mistakes that they made in particular uh the way they designed the circuit tree for the power supply, the control of the power in and out of the board. Um which was not optimal because IT wasn't done by town, the electrical engineers that was done by lay people. As such, the replicator once suffered from exploding controller boards, exploding, burning out controller boards, which is not a good thing when everything in the casing is made of wood.

So flash forge made one big change. I wouldn't all a big, but instead of redesigning the mighty I boy appropriately, which maker bot did do in the replicator two um instead, uh, flash verge put a little fan right on right by that part of the motherboard to keep IT cool. And I was contacted by flash forge during those years and they asked if because I was an electronics retailer and I frequented consumer electronics show and I made purchases directly with producers in china and south in my shop, and I I met some of their representatives, and I was fascinated by what they tried to pull off.

I said, I thought they tried to pull off. They said, well, listen, we'll sell you when a cost, and if you're interested, you can sell them for us from out of your store. I know, okay, so I got one of cost and then I ordered five of them.

And I did not have a replicator one at the time. I did have my first replicator too, though. Now this this design that they came out with which they which was called the creator the .

flash words that is yes.

IT had the dual extruded on IT a very explicit mark seven extracted um the replicator two has the mark eight and the differences are subtleties size of the hot, the heat block the but the heat break everything about IT is basically the same IT cooled through inductive cooling with a fan um on attached to a cool block IT didn't do a very good job of of cooling and when the replicator one started using, what at the time was the new filament pa, IT couldn't because the pa would get soft inside the thermal tube and IT wasn't cool enough.

So the replicator one didn't do a very good job with P, L, A, where as the replicator two was designed just for poa as such a didn't have a heated bill plate anyway. What does this have to do with flash forge in make a bot well maker bot at that time those years um had investors that we're stepping in and saying we want you to no longer be open source. And that's when the replicator two came out and they were being told by the people paying the bills that you've got to become a moment ure company.

Yet they didn't go after flash forge. They didn't do anything about flash forge. Flash forge continued and eventually used designs from the replicator one and the replicator to and came up with a new design which looked kind of like the casing of the replicator to a black bent metal casing that I believe these printers still have the dual extracted designs which weren't very good.

Um they did change a lot on these extremes. Us they started going with A P, T, F, A tough on lined thermal tubes that went into the melt zone that's different from most of the PDF e line thermal tubes that you buy today, which do not go all the way down to the meltzer. But these guys went all the way into the millstone, into the all the way down to an owl, which wasn't a good design.

Because in time, just a few months of constant printing, that too will get distorted and you'll have to replace IT. And IT was machine installed. So manu, manual installation of the teflon tube into that .

novel tip was just painful.

very painful. In our earliest episodes on this podcast, we used to discuss how to do that. Remember that. Anyway, again, maker bot never did anything about the obvious copy cat and the Price deferential was significant at least fifteen hundred dollars difference in Price at least possibly more um yet um even though flash watch had been undercutting sales, maker bott never send anything, never anything that to our knowledge to publicly we have no idea whether or not maker bott said to flash forge cut IT out so no idea um um uh one how one how was the other company and they created they built uh the duplicate or which was also a knock off of the combination replicator one replicator two.

I don't think one house around, and I don't we hear about .

flash forge quite a bit over the years. Flash forge has bittorrent into a standalone company with their own designs. They produce not only a range of pretty good three d partners, from what i'm told by by, by joe joe arson swears by of the flash words. We don't have one, so I can't I can't comment.

I still have my original one.

I still have my original creator also, which I don't I never use IT, but they've also gotten into the industrial side and they've make higher and industrial machines for a full production, which says a lot about their engineering skill sets and what they are capable love. okay. So now we go back and revisit the the news story we did last week and thanks to a couple of folks on our form.

And I apologize, I don't have your your handles on me at the moment. I appreciate people pointing this out to us. IT seems that what was the name of the partner we .

talked about .

for maker bot, the sketch sprint sketch spint of the sketch spint well IT looks exactly like .

a flash watch yes the um the gods of at least from what we can see, look exactly like a flash forge adventurer. And now the interesting thing is that the flash forge adventure, the the sort of entry level one that has what appears to be the same god. Now the firm where is different? There is a cloud of APP that that the maker botton version of that has that I don't think the afford one is is not sharing the the make about one is fully enclosed. Um there's a few variations on IT.

but I told that the slicer is current.

Yeah I can believe that.

Um so it's not the maker bot a slight or the ultimately er slicer ah it's well, I guess cura is the ultimate slicer that that makes sense. So yeah that makes sense that it's cura right. But the irony here is that they have reversed .

roles that appear to at least and .

the adventure .

of which is based on the entry level. One is three hundred dollars, which is no, I thought .

I was five hundred thousand.

That's the fci you want to rebuilding side closure panel okay, the adventure of five anna adventure pro this and I think that has have a carbon filter or something that the five am, which is the same same guts appears to be at least is uh, two hundred ninety eight dollar.

How much was the the ultimately er maker about thing?

Well, it's one of the great things where instead just telling you the Price on the website, it's as request equal. But we did find you can dig in and eventually find the Price and it's like twenty six hundred dollars, twenty three hundred dollars or .

twenty six hundred dollars something like, but you get a .

lock that you get a lot the door yeah well, and two thousand pad that you can on the touch screen that you can lock and ung that's worth two thousand yeah well.

okay. So IT IT looks like it's the same printer of hardware wise we can say about firm where because the kind of looks like a different user interface .

on the panel of probable based so many sort of families of firm war these days, and it's probably based on the same one problem. And honestly, the firm work aren't that different.

Both are both are P A only.

No, actually the the maker bot sketch sprint doesn't say anything about a heated billed play, but I suspect IT probably has when they are, just don't bother to tell you about IT because the adventure has a heated bill plate and you can print print no anything you can on on fd n printer.

I think IT would not hundred .

degree um bill plate and a two hundred eight degree now which gets you pretty good place but would .

IT wouldn't be ironic if we didn't have a heat to bill played in this .

that would be well, they don't list that on their specks.

They don't list much of anything on their specks. And that's because we believe, in our opinion, that is being sold to teachers and administrators in in schools and not hobby ists or engineers, right?

Yeah and maybe they're providing I i'm assuming that for your two thousand plus dollars you're getting Better support than you are for .

your two hundred. An assumption, an assumption, the assumption.

But if you're not really got question what you're what you're actually getting there .

and you think about teachers, administrators who are not into three d printing will will have no idea that flash forge will sell IT to you for two thousand dollars.

essentially a tenth of what of what they're charging for. Um but if they're providing you know lesson plans, if they're providing curriculum m integration, which I don't see any indication that they are. But but that that's a sort of thing that would be no a value add in that situation. But but but yeah ten times the markup, I don't see IT a lot .

of irony in this story and we'll see what happens. But it's I mean, flash watch has done this before, but not in such an ironic context day I am told the flash forge produced the drama. Three printer that came out .

a while ago have one .

a lot of a very good from what i've heard.

IT looked just like a regular flash forge and .

I mean labeled label drama on .

IT didn't work very well.

Yeah on also injected molded casing, which we don't we don't think that makes for a good three d printer because we like to heat up the inside to at least fifty c and over time, yeah, plastic won't do well.

Yeah, well, you've got you still got the aluminum frame on the inside that all the.

that holds all the structure .

of everything frame there, really rame plastic. Well, that the two hundred.

after all, the whole frame was playwood, if not long ago.

And well, that's true. But yeah, the three hundred or maker bott or flash ford rather has a aluminum frame. I mean, IT could be still like guess, but I has A A metal frame. okay. I'm so i'm assuming that that the plastic panel are just added on the outside.

Maybe it's prety good after .

all I data yeah, I know two thousand dollars for for a lock. That's that's baron. Well.

good luck to build companies.

So thanks to our friend court, I got encouraged to try A A film that's similar in many ways to peg called P, C, T, G.

Okay, you know what that sounds?

I do not. It's not only carbon. Yeah, PC is not poli carbonate.

something i've been looking on their website and i've not been able to find um anything actually saying what what the actual polymer is. But anyway I go on .

I went amazon and I found a no name company. I bought the clear no no um a not OPEC he cleared natural version of IT um I went with the clear translucent because I know that the most difficult print with peg, that's the tRicky st, you get the most, the the least help with the coLoring with coLoring tempers patchy to some degree and makes IT a little bit easier to print when there's nothing in there. Um it's the most difficult to handle.

It's when it's soft, when it's liquid IT IT stretches its strings IT leaves guber honor on your nozzle. It's the trick us. So I went with what I thought was the tRicky and I got more than I bargained for.

I set my printer to the temperatures, the middle in middle of the temperature range, as described on the materials, which at the time was two forty c and I got overheating bubbles in the material. So I turned the temperature down to two thirty five sea, and now i'm at the same temperature that I print peachy at. So IT states in its description of P, C, T, G that you can handle much higher ambient temperatures up to seventy five sea, which is pretty significant that that's pretty high.

Um I i'm not so sure that the material I got works that well. Um so IT not only did I feel like petchworth IT printed like petch y at the same team is peachy, so for all I know this school could be peachy and they just labeled IT as P C D G. So we like with A S A, we have the same kind of thing happened with A.

I ordered an inexpensive school. They are saying IT behaves just like hips, not A B, S. So I ordered a Better quality name brand, A S, A.

And I got I I got about the same performances. A, B, S, but of course, IT has the the outdoor, the Better outdoor stability. I'm thinking I got the same situation with P, C, T, G.

In the off brand is just not the .

off brand is they're just line. Not it's not necessarily a different material. So we're going to have to buy a different school .

and try again. okay.

So in the meantime, what I did print has seemed just as strong as as patchy on my, I printed printed IT in a test pattern for full contact support, which is what the real question that I proposed to me as will, will P, C T G stick to P L A in this material that I got. No will not um the the P L A worked perfectly fine for full contact support on the end result.

Print is actually really pretty um fact you to see the slow weill I have here, that's P C T G. And you really can't tell that it's any different from peg. 对。 IT seemed just as strong to me, a pegi when I tired IT when I tore IT. Is that the kind of testing that they described on the fibro logy dot website talks about what an .

iod test yeah there actually sent this to a label looks like and got some actual test numbers for IT any other doing what's called them called iod test which is um not a test of how proper you were in the .

one thousand eighties .

um little right um now it's actually a machine that has a big sort of swinging pendulum um and the test uh samples is called a co pon is clamped in the bottom machine. And basically what happens is this big weighted pendula swings and hits the sample, breaks the sample in half and then swings on its merry way. But IT doesn't swing as high. You measure how high light swings versus how high light swings without the test sample in there. And then um there is a calculation that tells you essentially how much energy was absorbed by the test coupon as IT was broken.

Unfortunately, that's not the kind of strength that typically most use cases cares about.

right? That the failure mode most radio princess into later separation .

and how well assuming you you ve printed IT in an orientation where the layers are going against the stress, right it's really a question of tair um .

yeah your your standard you would be printing the the lair lines would be going across the break so you would not be actually testing layer adhesion, but you test the material characteristic.

right? And but you don't care about IT after it's breaks. You care about how much how much energy will you require before IT break, right?

You want to know .

how how when is IT start to the form?

Yes there there are other other uh um character six are important other than .

just impression ways the tension how much will do you can you go sideways before IT starts to change its shape doesn't take much for most polymer, unfortunately.

Yeah yeah and I would be interested in actually to run on an iod test or or similar test um with the layer lines um such that the test is actually testing into later adhesion rather than material characteristic because that's usually the failure mode on this. More what we care about. So well.

the good news with P, C, T, G is the stuff that i've been able to find out. There is no more expensive than than petrol. The disadvantage unfortunately is that you're not onna have the same number of colors available that he is still the the material that is becoming the most popular, the material out there over pa for lots of reasons.

If you want to argue the benefits of P, L, A over peachy, i'd be happy to take you on on that. I had that argument years ago and I lost that argument, and i'm prepared to to argue the other way. I there a lot of folks out there that argue with about online, hey guys, i've printed truckloads of both materials, and I can tell you, hands down, that g will last longer. Work Better. Is so many things about IT way Better than P.

L, A. But if you want a higher quality surface print and don't care how long IT lasts, then people might be a Better choice.

Yes.

don't care how strong IT is and how long IT will last before it's Better.

Better quality, you get Better detail quality.

You don't leave IT in .

a hot car. yes.

So we got an email from tom from belgium asking about our opinions of one three d printer versus a different three d printer. I don't think we need to have mention which three d printers they were, but the one three d printer that was the the more optimal, the Better design, Better quality, Better from a lot of circumstances, bigger build area. Eta did have an I dex capability. I've always been a fan of this particular 3d printer design。 Um however, that three d printer does not come ready .

to print that .

three printer that i'm thinking about that we don't need to mention is only in kit form ah and in kit form. IT is not sumi assembled. IT is not almost assembled.

Now when it's a box apart, it's a box of little parts. Now the last kid I built was the e three tool changer I was a while ago. And I have no bones.

I have no bones about putting the whole thing together. To my surprise. They they shipped with the correct White um set up for configure pre built.

They didn't have to and I could have easily had built IT because i've done that already, right? I've taken core X, Y machines completely apart and put them back together. So I know what it's like. And if if you are a kid builder and you know how to build kids, and that's the important part here, if you know how to build kids um it's not that big of a deal. You've been there. You've done that you know the trials and you you know little landmines are you know you ve already learned what you didn't know bright when you buy a kit, the even some I assembled kits, if you've never built a kit, there are there's a .

learning curve.

There's a learning curve. And you can expect you to take when they say a forty hour build, it's not gonna be forty hours. You're gona have to take things back apart because we should did them wrong and you're not know you do them wrong until everything put together.

A lot of IT has to do with how good the documentation is on the on the build. A most I say the documentation is probably not as good as like like the lego documentation or every step is absolutely perfectly define um you're probably you follow what they what they instruct, but you're also probably going to have to figure stuff out along the way.

Yeah but you know this is typical kit. Kit adequate is that you know you you you got to have the right tools, right um and that means that if the cables aren't reconfigured, you're gonna need to know how to attach .

to punt more chase I what kit manufacturing pot pans for you.

The e 3d till change.

those cables .

were not fully configured. I had to make my own to some degree. There were some that we're reconfigurable on all of them. Yeah, but a nightmare. But even if there's .

definite a learning curve in that we've you got .

to have the right tools, you have to have .

the right set up.

you to lie, you a lot of them to destroy, learn to do IT.

you have to have a magnier.

but let's take the easier courses and that um there are tricks for getting screws into places and getting them tightened in ways that don't match the human form. Um so you have to have you have to have the knowledge of what to do with the tools. There are tricks for getting things square when you put them together. There are .

much how .

when they break, what you could might have to do if you make a mistake. There's a lot about kit building that's not instructions. Don't discount a build 是 if you've never built definitely。 And this one person that we are speaking to a in belgium is .

doing that. okay.

Now I agree that the kid that this person's look at at is the Better three d printer in the end. But I believe they're discounting the build. They're not taking IT to account that they're probably going to have to rebuild IT a couple of times as theyve never built a three d printer before. And there are things in that, that are traps that if you don't have the skill set, you might be finding yourself in a bit of a pickle.

Well, as long as long as that something that you're down for, I mean, I wouldn't try to discourage anybody from building building a kid. I don't think we're trying to do that here. But yeah, I do do not discount uh, how much work that's going to be for sure.

What I what I want to support my opinion is don't build a big kit from scratch. Your first three.

I definitely would not do that.

Go buy an inexpensive, go on ebay, find the cobra pro, any cuba cobra pro for anywhere from sixty dollars and ninety dollars, get one of and it's not gonna be brand new. It'll be somebody's I couldn't build IT. So it's not going to be perfect, but it's the perfect way to start to learn about what you don't know.

Um you're learn about configuring IT. You're learn about and putting the frame together square. You'll learn about adJusting the wheels accordingly, how to get the tool into those tight spaces. Um how do we just how to get IT configured and how to get IT printing cheaply, inexpensively?

That is that is a good tip because you you're getting something in that case that's not entirely apart, right? Yeah and it's not usual parts, but but it's sub assemblies that that you will get to put together. You don't have a lot of money invest in and you buy IT on amazon. If IT doesn't work for you, you can send IT.

Yeah, i'll never forget when I got my first three printer and as as replicator two, and I unboxed IT, and I set IT up on my death, and I looked underneath and I looked into IT, and I couldn't understand what that orange material was. That was around the novel. I had no idea what that crap was. yeah. IT took me about six months to learn what IT was, because eventually I had to change you because I had IT was the .

captain holding .

on ceramic c fiber stuff, the worst thermal blanket you can design.

How is the harder stuff to work with you? I can remember making like a little like out of, and tapping them do with get on take.

But I got really good at.

yeah.

Oh, well, I witness the another show writing to the hard drive, waiting for encoding, uploading a commitment on our feed to all of our very supportive listener's. Thank you all out there for your support on patrons on thank you for those positive reviews. We really do appreciate those a lot.

Hi, thanks. You're listening. We're doing IT for fun here. We're not here to make any money. We're not here to to sell advertising space.

We're not here to sell any printings or filament we hear just because my body and I would like to sit and gab about our hobbies and things that we do, which includes making in three d printing and other things related to IT. And I figured, let's turn the mikes on and maybe people would enjoy listening in. And so far, in the past ten years, our numbers prove that a lot of people do like listening. And so that's good. So um I have a thing of the week but and i'm going to a blan back on a functional thing of the week rather than a decoration or a fun thing.

But we have just printed all of our halloween decoration.

a hallows over, and the sugar buzz has faded in its time to look at printing things that have real value to them in a couple .

weeks before you start printing Christmas. I don't do they mean print thanksgiving stuff .

yeah you where you can make like rings, little .

turkeys.

I guess. Anyway, this has got nothing to do with the holiday. This is has to do with the inexpensive nippy cuts that we get.

Will we buy chinese 3d printers? And i've got some nip cutters that are not cheap. Y that would probably work with these as well.

Usually these nippy cuts are spring loaded, which means they are open and the tips are incredibly sharp, and the blades on them are pretty sharp. So this is a cap for covering up. And keeping the nippy cuts closed comes to us from a thing of verse user .

whose handle is croaky otherwise roommate s no from france.

And IT looks like it's pretty, pretty easy to print cap that stays on by the rivet popping through the slot. And chances are the first time you pull IT off IT, you're gonna a lose IT. But it's a good functionality thing. In this way, you could have your nip colors in your pocket or in your bag and not worry about getting stabbed by them.
