It's time for epson de five hundred and seventy nine of the clock wise bike from ray recorded wednesday, november six, two thousand and twenty four clockwise, four people, four tech topics, thirty minutes.
Welcome back, clock wise, the tech podcast where we bide our time. My name is dead morn and I am joined across here in IT, not my usual a homa sechin is a way this week, but ability filling in for him is an inching his way up. The leader board IT is developer and pakistan. James thomson, hi James.
hi. I mean, what I made lack in comparison to mika's, intelligence, wisdom and carma I make up for by always saying, yes.
so i'm here.
Yeah, that is, you know what? That is a treat that is often unappreciated. Well, this is, of course, the show where we invite on to fantastic guest to talk about for tech topics to my left this week.
IT is the guy that won't run the vibbard party by making a big announcement when he leads. I just read what they put here. It's jeremy burge.
Welcome back, jeremy. I just think it's pull out. I believe it's called an I goodbye .
until my left .
is a writer, a radio producer on podcast. Shelly brisbane.
hello. I am trying to clean on to a little spot on the leader board, but James is always ahead of me holding the space. So hi, glad you here.
Let us kick things off. Uh my topic today in I O S eighteen point to beta, you can select more types of apps uh and adjust their default. So I think messaging and phone calls are in there as well.
My questions, do you use any different default apps already? And do you think they're any categories of apps that you can set default for missing besides calculator? Jeremy.
i'll start with you. Boy, i'm going the other direction I ditched even note this year, after the thousands time, I opened up in A A new feature and and all I really want to IT to do was open faster. So i've gone back to apple noise, and nothing else really jumps out of my cameras untempted untempted on the cameras.
But I do do a lot of switching, got a great camera apps on IOS bot. I do a lot of video, then photo, then video, then photo. And as far as I gather and and apologies if this is not the case, but I ve not yet found an update kind of nails birth.
You know, we get these specialized photo apps and specialized video apps. And so the apple one is what I want to be the go to. And of course, a calculators. I'm not onna comment on James.
I mean, you know calculator, as you say, is of course the most obvious category here, but you can at least now add any APP you like mentioning no favorites to the control center because there's an open APP command in a shortcut section which works for that. Um if the developer has been perhaps too busy to uh edit themselves, but looking at my phone, however i'm the same. I'm pretty vanilla.
The majority of my apps are for other services that don't really over at neatly with the apple stuff. I do have google maps installed, but I generally prefer to use apple maps when I can. I use author for two factor codes.
So you know, I should probably try and move that to apple's own mechanisms, but it's more the hassle of untangling all that stuff that how has prevented me. I don't personally have any great desire to replace things like apple stores and apple pay with other services, though I think it's great if apple eventually has to open things like that up to competitors, especially worldwide. But even though that I think inertia is gone to leave most people using the default, actually I how about you?
I consist that I would mostly use utilities this sort of thing. For example, I I live in drafts. I have nothing against apple notes, but I I love grasped the way you intertech the IOS device.
You don't really need a default text editor. And maybe that's just something different functionality. That would be interesting if, like I said, okay, every time I want to create text, just defauts me into draft. And that would require something different in terms of the bi in IOS, rather than just just choosing dress. So I guess I can at a control center item on my ipad, I have A A widget that I like, the pops me into drafts. Ts and mali believe I have some company here when I say that, yeah, i'd like to switch out of apple male, but I have not found a male APP that I like the best I I understand that my stream is coming to IOS at some point, and I think that is probably a front runner because I really .
like IT on the mac. These are all interesting answers. Thank you. I am similar a to many of you. I am pretty much in the default in terms of things that you can actually choose. The one that bugs me is calendar because you've used fantastic call for many years and I like fantastic cal, but I get frustrated by the fact that like the data detectors and stuff all kind of work with the internal calendar data.
So I know IT sinks if you have got to set up, which is great, but IT is still feels like sometimes I end up with this weird into media where I have to go into calender to make sure something has gotten put in right before. IT shows a meta gallo after alter stuff. I'm curious to see how these things actually end up leveling in the plane field because I do think one of the biggest frustrations is the fact that a lot of apple's zone net feel like they get special treatment and they get to do things that other apps don't.
And I don't know if the these regulations will reach deeply enough inside or recognize all the things that the apple's apps can do that others can't. But that is a place where I do feel like the playing field could be leveled. And so I appreciate at least the option even if I have not yet availed myself of IT. But thank you for your thoughts on that topic. Let us go to our second topic.
which comes from jeremy. Boy, je je je mergy. It's in the I O S. Eighteen point to beta.
And I am interested if any of you have tried IT and do whether you have tried IT or not. Any thoughts? I'll leave IT open for the James.
So I just got access to all the generative image stuff last night, so I haven't really used that a great deal yet. Day to day, I have a no idea exactly how je mogi was trained, but certain ly, the panda head that he uses for the examples that I gave is the apple panda o. So IT implies, uh, to some extent, it's been trained on apple's own image, which I have slightly less of a problem with. Um I don't honestly know if I will use IT though I think part of the appeal of emotion is that is generally a shared set of standard images that we all have a sense of the meaning associated with each one you know, even with something like custom reactions on this code or slack, there is at least a shared group of uh reactions which you know understand understanding within the community of what a certain one means rather than this complete free for all which I think is just onna be a bit of a mess. What do you think.
Shelly James, like I completely agree about the shared vocabulary and for specific reason, because a motives are very much accessible, you can um you know find out what they are by reading a label. Uh, I find them too small visually to interpret most cases. So god forbid you send me some sort of smiling.
And unlike what does that mean? Only the label will tell me what that means. And a lot of that vocabulary emogene is passed along from person to person and use over time. And what color heart is appropriate in this situation causes me to tear my hair out as somebody who who has accessibility issues with the magic.
And even if you label your gene mogi or if, if, if I I actually haven't done enough testing to fight out how the works yet, but even if A I labels your gene mogi according to what you ask the gene mogi to be, it's a panda with muscles holding a kitten over its head. That doesn't tell me what James meant by that. And so I really lacked that context in general because they're too small for me to see.
In many cases, although i've watched some demos, I like what I i've seen, like when I can look at somebodies, somebody's creation of the emerging is a physically larger size than what you see when IT comes out on the other end. And so that's my problem with IT. And so my thing is probably when people send them to me, I probably not going to be as good to receiver of them as somebody else. And IT is going to make me unlikely to send as many of them as as as of the woods. So i'm i'm sort of A A killed joy when IT comes in modus and I jar me I feel like I need to apologize to you personally.
But then what do you think? Um i've later around with this for a week or so. Um I think it's a well conceived feature for people who enjoy using M O G I and like using mog and that uh yeah there's just times where there's not the right mogi for something and it's disappointing.
Um and the idea that you can just sort generate that on the flies pretty cool. That had very mixed results with that an execution. Um the feature where you can make a mogi out of people is weird.
I don't know how I feel about that. I prefer the generic aog. I look I think um even there IT struggles with things.
On the other day I posted I try to make a bag paper and IT was very confused to what backpack look like. Sr James um and basically generated a moggy with people holding ARM folds of like clarin. That's fail yeah .
I guess that's it's .
like five instruments, right? Just have mul together. So you know there are some questions there and I I have some i've had some really weird results for some reason, but mostly if you type in like names of, say, celebrity will generate nothing.
I will tell you can find anything who are on a way I was like taxi with events and I told you to generate an emerge of lesly Nelson and I did generate something not a thing that really looked like was nillywill. I am super puzzles to why that got through. Um so yeah there there's some weird around IT um and I i've give find myself occasion disappointed in terms of what it's producing, but I like the idea of IT.
I think chalais points about accessibility are a really good ones that does raise some some questions uh, about that. But as a feature to play around with that, that's fun and entertaining. IT is by far the Better of apple's image related AI tool. So perhaps we'll just leave IT at that. Jar me when you rap up.
I was writing an article about jet moggy kind of trying to cover my experience playing with IT. And I realized that I hate IT. IT is IT is awful.
I was trying to be positive. As you mentioned, its OK ish at objects, food, animals, as far as I can tell. Uh, you do get the weed. I eyes stuff along the way. I tried to get IT to make me a platos and beautiful australian creature.
IT kind of gave me a cute head of a plata POS, okay, you know, i'm trying to be positive, but boy, the rest of IT, yeah, you're right down. The the versions of people are weird where you can make yourself that is quite relatively realistic. It's Better than memory if I tell to make me dressed as a pirate, uh, IT looks kind of like me. IT looks Better than than me. O G did where every generic what I looked the same just so yeah that sort of it's got some good things about IT.
But overall I could not make a single jan margie that was useful that has no um I I headline the article of that that are having no soul, any emotion if you especially if you went for being upset, oh crying or angry or anything like this, you just mostly get smiles still awesome emerge like to but if the goal of jet mergy is to do things that unicode margie won't do, IT kind of refuses to do, most of those that doesn't badly. I wanted to find a narrower t doesn't know what IT is. I wanted to sit for a cargo bike like a dutch style one didn't, couldn't create IT.
The list goes on IT. IT does things badly and ordinary. I think the feature would be very cool.
The inline images, what they put like an emerge, lack image with your text, would be very cool with artist designed emerge. Imagine like eckles. But an emerging pack, you add that on and none of the A I gf a sound, i'm struggling. I've really turned to come up with a good ones and have not made a single good gene mogi sorry team, it's fun to play with, but that makes your friend very hot as well.
right? That's two topics down, two topics left to go, which of course means IT is half time here, clockwise. And this weeks episode brought you by oracle, even if you think it's a bit over hype to A I is suddenly everywhere, from self driving to molecular medicine to business sufficiency.
If it's not your industry yet, it's coming fast. But A I needs a lot of speed and computing power. So how do you compete without cost spiralling out of control, time upgrades to the next generation of the cloud? Oracle cloud infection cure.
O C I. O C I is a blazing fast and secure platform for infrastructure, database application development, puzzler, AI, machine learning workloads. O C I cost fifty percent less for commute and eighty percent list for networking, so are saving a pile of money.

Our things are oracle for sponsoring the show and all of rely. Alright, half time is over. James, I turn IT over to you.
So what's your favorite end to end encysted messaging platform? Do you have advanced data protection switched on for your car account? Any other tips along those lines? Shelly.
what about you? I'll tell you, I use the messaging platform that I am required to by the person i'm talking to, which makes you sound like I don't have any agency in practical matter. It's usually I messages or what's up because that's where the people I talk to are.
Occasionally, as a journalist, i've used signal, but I don't say that I prefer IT particularly because I I haven't really had occasion to use that a great deal. It's once in a great, great well. And I know a lot of people in my biz will advertise their signal numbers and and that is a very useful way for people to get messages to them that they don't want others to intercept.
But that's not really the kind of work I do. And I I don't have advanced da protection because as far as I can tell and you guys let me know, I don't believe I any sort of celebrity. So yeah, no, no.
Well, see how .
much just mogi .
turns out and next to your .
celebrity of my book.
thanks. Well, fishing for compliments and .
IT worked um yeah i'm with Shelley. I've used all the messaging upset some time or another. I primarily will rely on eye message um mainly because I do trust apple you know in a world where you have a lot of giant companies and it's really a gradient of how trust sy they are apples, at least on the more trust for the end of the scale. I won't say I trust them completely, but I am relatively certain they are not you know just lying about the security of their platform, which other platforms have done um so that tends to be were going now I realized, ed, without the advanced data protection on, I do not have an on there is not a full encryption.
The icicle backup s still contained the contents of your messages, so it's not a perfect solution, but I am willing to write that line right now and say the convenience of having those backup PS in the case that something does happen is still worth more to me at this particular moment than the ability to have the one hundred percent data security um that might change. I may, given the way things are going, I may decide to make a change as far as that goes. I was just reading a post recently about like my recently, I mean, like before the show about other steps that one might take online to secure one's digital footprint and found myself wondering, I will prepare you to my for these things.
Really, I attended to be very profit with, just like posting on things in making accounts for all sorts of services. And these days i'm like, well, maybe that was an unwise period of my life. So i'm seeking for our message for now. But at the same time, I I am waiting to sort of see what what have of shoes are going to come dropping our way. Tell me.
what about you always reluctant to recommend metal products? I don't love the fact that they are in so many social and messaging products, but what's up really is very good. What IT does IT sends messages in reception area Better is a cross platform. I'm also not sharing a bunch of stuff.
You know, I go under the old set of premise that you still assume that whatever you type us and will make IT into the world I know that's not the case from an eclipse point of, but nothing starched people screen chatting things ah yeah I I still go with the premise you don't try to talk people and you don't output secrets in text you made up in a shady boss somewhere i'm still of that belief that you just I know that's not a luxury for everybody to make up a person but if it's so important that no one finds out what you've said ah yeah then that's that's what you've got to do otherwise everything else this happens. So yes, but what's up? Very useful.
I mean, as a completely general point unrelated to anything, I believe we should all think about the security of our most private data a little bit more than we do today. And I think there are some pretty great ways to do that, that don't require a lot of work instead of sending messages to your loved ones via SMS or on a platform like slike, disco, dmax, don, where stuff is sitting on the server is a lot Better to use services which have ended and encysted. Know I message, as you've said, is a pretty good example of that.
You know apple doesn't know what you're sending, can't be compelled to provide contents with your messages to say, a government, uh, but generally, you know, I I preferred to use signal when i'm talking to people who are on my message, though you know even met as apps like what's up, as you say, are, I believe, fully into end encrypted even if I don't particularly like you matter. You know what's up is not the worst choice there. But yes, if you are also in the latest systems you do of the option to turn on the advanced data protection for your eclipse ata.
And what that means is all your data stored in I cloud, including any backup PS, which does include your messages, is subject to the same level of privacy as things like your health data and other other stuff like that is today. I've had IT on for about year. I've not had any problems with IT whatsoever.
And you can set IT up so that your loved ones can recover things and get access to IT a if needed. If it's something like a weather out that you check a lot, maybe apple's APP could be a Better choice. The apple store now has a feature where IT has this APP privacy section for each APP on the APP store page the developers need to fill in and some developers might rely on people not actually looking at that data.
There's a data linked to you part which talks about data that is connected personally to you. And if it's this location for that, maybe that's something to think about. Shelly, what's your fourth topic?
Well, i've been thinking about another IOS feature, not a new one, but one that i've seen utilized a little bit more. Maybe since IOS eighteen came out life activities. I also have a prophet now. So I see them on my dynamic island. And i'm wondering, specifically, in terms of live activities, how do you feel about them as a way of getting information from outside your own life, not to whether your timers is going off or how your recipe APP is doing, but news and sports and another data like that? And do you think live activities is a good solution for that kind of data?
I mean, yes, I do think this is a good solution if you want that kind of data. I have had IT on in the past for some sports stuff. I'm not really a sports fan.
I really had some more a curiosity to see like baseball, but and and I think it's cool. I definitely know people who want that kind of information deliver to them up to the minute, and that's great that IT exists. There's just there's so little that I find that I want delivered at that rate of the consequentially.
I recently ended up you know within last year at some point moving phones or moving after whatever um end up with all my breaking news slorc off. And you know what, my life has been Better. I don't even need to have that information delivered in notification much last be on you up to date every second with what is going on in um that might change for specific incidents.
Uh, you know, i'm sure there are there are occasions where maybe I do on breaking usual letters. I want to fall something in real time, but I just I think there is a certain degree of my lock screen is my haven and I don't necessary want to be indicated with that data all the time. What about you, Jerry?
I am more of a delayed activities. Guy, yeah, no, no live activities for me. I'm out of the sport stuff otherwise. I mean, i'm i'm not pick for notifications in general. I've told most of them move as as IT is.
I did notice this has reminded me just today before recording, I like tiktok and I have tiktok on my fire, but I do not have notifications on because why would I? But there's this thing on your foreign ld serious suggestions. And IT always suggests just things I don't want to do, like if you're going to check out our hotel, IT suggests I found them.
This one popped up suggesting that I ordered my tiktok for you fade. And I don't even think that's tiktok pushing the story that get theory deciding how you've been tiktok at this time a day. But again, I didn't need a tiktok notification on on my first.
So when IT comes to light activities specifically, I think that the ones I use, the one or two times a year I call a ride chair uber or something like that. That's kind of helpful. Ks, short, and yeah, I think I wouldn't mind a sport one. Maybe maybe i'll try a sport, but everything else definitely love the news. I do not need news on my all my screen.
yeah. I mean, first, I do not have any interest in sport whatsoever, aside from a very limited number of documentary and T V shows based around soccer, which I find strAngely fascinating. But the actual live score part, spot part is not of any interest.
Aside from that, when I was thinking about this question and I had to answer, I realized, ed, that I do not believe I have ever used a single live activity. So I am probably the worst person on the planet to answer this question. As for news, you know, I want to constrain my access to news to when I feel I am emotionally willing and able to deal with looking at IT.
And I don't want my phone surprising me think with things that IT feels I should be aware of, because, you know, trust me, phone, I am probably already quite aware. I think like fewer notifications rather than more is where I want to go with my phone. You know, there's a very limited number of people that I want to disturb me at any moment in time. I do not consider like a major use broadcasting organisations. One of those people.
well, sadly, I did think about this topic because of yesterday's election and because of apple news offering a live activity which gave you the elector vote counts for each canada in your dynamic island. And I initially did IT because it's kind of part of my job to keep track of breaking news. And especially since twitter has become a vio cesspool, I don't go there.
And so for breaking news type stuff, I need to have a method where I can somehow have my attention gotten. And so I have bought into the idea of some breaking news in my life. I have paired back notifications a great deal, because many creators of breaking news, and this is not live activity specific, often give you far more notifications than they need to.
IT is not breaking news that the new york times has released this morning. Brief ing IT happens every morning. If I want IT, i'll go get IT. But for a hot minute, I had the live activity for the election, and then I became too stressful and I turned IT off.
But and I am glad I did A I and I don't feel like the live activity for news is something that would be beneficial, al, to me, in general, i'd rather have that as notification tions in the lock screen, which I find easier to ignore anyway if I want to, and easier to organized because there are more options for that. And I put the sport part of this question in because I thought perhaps if any of you, for sports fans, that that might actually be the best place for IT, because you just get that all you want is the score right? What is my team ahead? Is my team behind is, as my teams finished playing, know what? What's the status there? Ironically, that the thing I actually want live activities for most is unavailable to me.
We have a local food delivery service. I know crazy, right? But IT is is not dasha is not uberti, but it's called favor. And they do not provide alive activity.
And the one time I want one is when my runner is asking me some question about whether I want a substitution for my thai hou because they don't have beams, louse or whatever is. And I ve missed any number of those messages because I don't have alive activity pinging me there. There are notifications and I have notifications on favorite turned in such a way that I don't have to see the many advertisements I get.
But that means when I actually ordered something, I don't get the notification I wants want. That's their problem, not mine, i'm afraid. But yeah, i've activities for news IT was very stressful, but i'm not said that apple did IT. I thought I thought I was a useful, but I didn't need that my life last .
night live activities for being sprouts.
But not elections, right? As four topics down, we got just tough time for a bonus topic. But before we get there, I want tell you about our other response.
